John Hurt takes the title role in this study of a man's journey to self-discovery in the frozen isolation of Antarctica. Co-starring Hayley Mills and Dudley Sutton, with a script from award-winning writer Anthony Shaffer and wildlife sequences shot by multi-award-winning filmmaker Arne Sucksdorff, Mr. Forbush and the Penguins is presented here in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements. Life for Richard Forbush, brilliant biology student and conceited philanderer, is one long round of eat, drink and be merry. But his decision to accept a six-month research post in the Antarctic, making the first detailed study of a penguin colony, changes all that... Living in Shackleton's derelict hut, Forbush is alone at the frozen edge of the world, his only links to civilisation a two-way radio and letters to his elusive, would-be girlfriend, Tara, in London. Through an often ferocious winter in the company of the penguins, he grows increasingly attached to his hardy, endearing subjects - learning profound lessons in endurance and humility. Rio Grande (Masters of Cinema) - Limited Edition
18,49 € *
zzgl. 1,49 € Versand

Perhaps one of the most underrated of the collaborations between director John Ford and star John Wayne, Rio Grande manages to be both a conclusion and a new beginning for this most iconic of actor-filmmaker collaborators. The film is the final entry in Ford and Wayne's “Cavalry Trilogy,” following their hits Fort Apache (1948) and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949). Yet it also marks the first of five appearances Wayne made with actress Maureen O'Hara, three of which were directed by Ford. Wayne is Lt. Col. Kirby Yorke, attached to the Texas frontier in 1879 to protect settlers from attacks by Apaches. When Yorke's son – a West Point flunkee turned Army private – is assigned to his father's regiment, tensions flare upon the arrival of Yorke's estranged wife Kathleen (O'Hara), who wants their teenaged son out of Yorke's unit. After Apaches attack, the stakes of Yorke's mission escalate, and he must journey to Mexico where the Apaches are hiding out. With his son and two old recruits (Ford/Wayne regulars Ben Johnson and Harry Carey Jr.) as accompaniment, Yorke faces his toughest battle. The Quiet Man (1952) may be the most fondly remembered collaboration between Ford, Wayne, and O'Hara, but ironically, that classic wouldn't even exist if not for Rio Grande, as studio Republic was so (incorrectly!) certain that the later film would lose money, that they only agreed to its production on the condition that Ford and his collaborators make another western first to cover the costs. But Rio Grande stands on its own as yet another outstanding meeting of these remarkable talents. SPECIAL FEATURES Limited Edition O-Card (2000 units only) 1080p presentation on Blu-ray, from a new transfer completed by Paramount’s preservation department in 2019 Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing Brand new and exclusive feature-length audio commentary by western authority Stephen Prince Scene specific audio commentary with Maureen O’Hara A video essay on the film by John Ford expert and scholar Tag Gallagher The Making of Rio Grande – archival featurette Theatrical trailer PLUS: a collector’s booklet featuring a new essay by western expert Howard Hughes; a new essay by film writer Phil Hoad; transcript of an interview with John Ford; excerpts from a conversation with Harry Carey, Jr.

Coders

'Clive Thompson is more than a gifted reporter and writer. He is a brilliant social anthropologist. And, in this masterful book, he illuminates both the fascinating coders and the bewildering technological forces that are transforming the world in which we live.' David Grann 'Clive Thompson is the ideal guide to who coders are, what they do, and how they wound up taking over the world. For a book this important, inspiring, and scary, it's sinfully fun to read.' Steven Levy 'Guiding readers through the under-covered history of programming's female roots, Coders points with assurance to the inequities that have come to define coding today. Readable, revealing, and in many ways infuriating!' Rebecca Traister 'Code shapes coders, and coders shape the code that changes how we think, every day of our lives. If you want to create a more humanistic digital world, read this book to get started.' Sherry Turkle 'Fascinating. Thompson is an excellent writer and his subjects are themselves gripping . . . Many books have covered this territory, but Coders is bang up to date in a fast-moving world . . . Perhaps [coders will] give it to loved ones, with a note attached: "Read this, that's me!"' Nature

The French Revolution

"The object of these few pages is not to recount once more the history of the Revolution: that can be followed in any one of a hundred text-books. Their object is rather to lay, if that be possible, an explanation of it before the English reader; so that he may understand both what it was and how it proceeded, and also why certain problems hitherto unfamiliar to Englishmen have risen out of it." "If a personal point may be noted, the fact that the writer of these pages is himself a Catholic and in political sympathy strongly attached to the political theory of the Revolution, should not be hidden from the reader. Such personal conditions have perhaps enabled him to treat the matter more thoroughly than it might have been treated by one who rejected either Republicanism upon the one hand, or Catholicism upon the other; but he believes that no personal and therefore exaggerated note has been allowed to intrude upon his description of what is a definite piece of objective history lying in the field of record rather than in that of opinion." -Hilaire Belloc

Upon the Dull Earth and Other Stories , Hörbuch...
9,95 € *

When an interviewer asked Phillip K. Dick “What is the most important quality for a writer to have?” he replied “A sense of indignation... A writer writes because it's his response to the world. It's a natural process, like respiration... The capacity for indignation is the most important thing for a creative person. Not the aesthetic capacity but the capacity for indignation... And especially indignation at the treatment afforded other people. To see some of the things that are going on in the world and to feel indignant...That is the basis of the writer.” Whatever it was that stimulated his creative juices, we are the lucky beneficiaries, as demonstrated in this collection of five stories, all first published in 1954. In “Exhibit Piece” a long-suffering museum worker becomes a little too attached to his display of mid-20th century lifestyle. In “Upon the Dull Earth” a young man refuses to let go of his soul mate, and he creates a chain reaction that he couldn’t have anticipated. In “Progeny” one man’s idea of how to raise a child is challenged by new, more scientific techniques. “The Last of the Masters” explores a post-apocalyptic world, where anarchists don’t just occupy Wall Street, they occupy the entire planet. Finally, in “Breakfast at Twilight”, a family awakes to find theirs is the only house left on their street, and they are forced to make the most important decision of their lives. 1.
